In short, amazing views, outstanding Piri Piri chicken. Best in the Algarve? I'm not arguing.....
Having arrange a trip to Monchique solely for an excuse to sample the reknowned Restaurant A Rampa, it would have been easy to be disappointed..........luckily I was not! Located about 3.5km past Monchique, along the winding roads through the sweet smelling forests that pepper the hills, on the road to Foia, A Rampa looks no more special than many of the restaurants in the vicinity. However, taking our seat and looking out across the valleys, the forests, all the way down the hill to the sprawling town of Portimao and the beautiful serene looking deep blue Ocean, it is clear to see one of two reasons that this restaurant is so popular. This view is truly breathtaking, unspoilt and almost totally uninterrupted panaromic views of a large chunk of The Algarve itself. The second reason this restaurant is so popular is of course the food and its Piri Piri Chicken in particular. For a very reasonable 8e, a large plate of Piri Piri Chicken and a side plate of chips appeared after an unexplicably long delay. Not a problem, it was worth the wait. Although a portion for 1, the 2 of us shared the 8 amply sized pieces of chicken. The Piri Piri sauce was out of this world. Not so hot and spicy that it burned the roof of your mouth, but more of a gentle kick so that you knew what you were tasting. The chicken itself was as soft and tender as you could wish for. Superb! The chips were for my taste a little too greasy, however, generous helpings of salt and vinegar made it a very palatable platemate to the Piri Piri chicken. Dessert? I will write about this following my next visit. A large, mixed display of all their homemade desserts looked very, very appetising, and had something and more for everyone, but I did not want to lose the taste from my main meal. The service was friendly and courteous and they were happy to accomodate us with our (well behaved) canine companion. In short, amazing views, outstanding Piri Piri chicken. Best in the Algarve? I'm not arguing.....
